RIP: Norman Borlaug

The father of the green revolution, Norman Borlaug, who was credited with feeding 1,000,000,000 people (suck it, Jesus) when he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, has died at the age of 95.

A truly great man whose work is a testament to, if not the epitome of, the power of science to improve lives.

Um... it's also worth noting that Borlaug is also the guy who made our food supply reliant on petrochemicals. When peak oil hits -- and the oil companies themselves certainly believe it will -- the price of food is going to rise along with that of gas, with lots of potential for disaster. Basically, he let us exchange a chronic problem for a catastrophe. Although that may be praiseworthy, I'd hold off on the eulogies until after we solve the problem of petrochemical fertilizer supply.

Anonymous: this man saved the lives of a billion people, and you're so small that you use this moment to promote your stupid political agenda?

How utterly sad for you!
