Uh, I think he was covering his ass. Trying to. And, BTW, this is the first mention I've seen of this story on an atheist site. Why? Why can't we just face up to the fact that these are really bad people?
And how about the guy who shot the abortion protester the other day? Haven't seen a word about him on any of these sites. We were all too happy to jump on Scott Roeder as typifying Fundamentalist Christian thinking.
I need more evidence than what Fox shows me. This was not exactly objective, professional journalism. But let me elaborate a little more fully.
Let's look at the timeline.
The secretly filmed meeting took place on Aug 18. This means that J.C. Vera contacted police on Aug 20. The video was released on Sept 9th. Covering his ass? A federal investigator was already looking into the matter by the time the video was released. Can't you think of a better reason than "He's pure evil" for him getting in contact with the authorities to stop human smuggling? Furthermore, how did he know that there was ass to be covered without precognition?
ACORN has been at the receiving end of a lot of bizarre and demonstrably ridiculous claims. I worked for a campaign during the election. I know what registration law requires. ACORN reported and handed over, as is consistent with the law, the Mickey Mouse voter registration cards that they were handed by their workers, who were paid by the number of signatures they got. How many prosecutions have there been of ACORN officials (and I'm not talking about the people who forged the registration cards)?
I think that it is clear that most of the demonization of ACORN stems from which population they serve.
It would be wrong and unreasonable of me to pass judgment on the people without seeing the unedited tape of the interview.
Re: Roeder/abortion protester. This was not an execution in church of someone who had been shot at wounded at least twice in the past, someone who had been on "most wanted" vigilante sites. This was someone with beefs on a rampage, though I don't know that they have explained why the business guy was killed or who the third intended victim was. I have no idea whether the guy being held for this recent murder is an atheist or not.
I know enough to withhold an uninformed opinion.
"And, BTW, this is the first mention I've seen of this story on an atheist site."
So what? How is this an inherently atheist story?

har har har. Good try. So WHO exactly said that Scott Roeder exhibited "typical" Christian Fundamentalist behavior? If shooting people were "typical" of christian fundamentalists we would have a pretty large body count, and I know of no atheist who is so logically stunted that they would ignore this. Perhaps you got this idea from World News Daily or Fox News, where they charge those with idealistic differences as making sweeping generalizations so that they can then excuse their own fallacious accusations. Yes, it's horrible that atheists accuse all christians of being murderers, but it's ok to say of an organization of thousands who mostly help the poor and minorities "Why can't we just face up to the fact that these are really bad people?" based on the actions of a handful employees. I don't see hypocrisy there.
And scott, how many "atheist" websites have you visited in order to make your "first time" statement meaningful? Thanks for playing...
Perhaps it's also worth noting that that is exactly what law enforcement asks people to do, comply with the criminal and remember as much information as you can in order to report later.
I'm so very confused about what happened here. So far, I've been able to glean the following:
1. Pimp and pro go to X asking advice about human smuggling.
2. X reports couple to the police.
3. Couple turn out to not be a pimp and pro after all.
4. X say's "Oops, my bad."
5. ???
6. X is fired.
Can someone help me with the logic of this situation? What am I missing?
